The importance of appropriate hearing-aids

Image showing Kaithady School for the Deaf, Sri LankaAs much as a gift of hearing aids for the Nuffield School for the Deaf from well-wishers and philanthropists is greatly appreciated, inappropriate aids given out without proper screening and by an unqualified dispenser does more harm than good: Children resort to sign language when they cannot hear, thus losing the opportunity to be integrated in the regular schooling system.

Recent incidences of hearing aids proving to be of little use, meant that large sums of money were unfortunately needlessly wasted and the hopes of children wishing to improve their communication abilities were dashed. These children often end up so frustrated and disappointed that they become doubtful of the actual value of hearing aids – sadly not knowing the difference that a correctly dispensed aid could make to the quality of their lives.
