“I first met with Lady Jean Wilson in Cape Town in 2005 and we started talking about the development of ENT services in Malawi.

Prior to that there was virtually no ENT services in Malawi. The first thing that Lady Wilson suggested was to send some clinical Officers to Nairobi and train as ENT Clinical Officers. Thus, Nelson Msiska and Arthur Kapitao trained as ENT Clinical Officers returning to Malawi in 2008.

Nelson is the only dedicated ENT Clinician running ENT services at Kamuzu Central Hospital, the second biggest referral hospital in, Malawi.

In 2012, we started training ENT Clinical officers here in Malawi. This was made possible by the support we got from HCC. HCC supported us by paying for the Curriculum meeting that developed the curriculum for ENT Clinical Officers training.

Recently HCC has supported us by sending a Consultant, Howard Taylor, who helped develop the first National Development Plan on Ear and Hearing Care. The National Plan articulates our four year vision on the development of ENT services in Malawi.

We are very grateful to HCC for the enormous support that we have received. It has helped established the ENT services in Malawi.”
